The Eversheds Legal Writing Competition 2014

Enhance your career with winning words

Global law firm Eversheds is giving students and young professionals the chance to gain first-hand practical experience through our Legal Writing Competition 2014.

Work experience can ensure you have the relevant skills and experience to kick-start a career in law. The winner of the Legal Writing Competition 2014 will join our Vienna office as intern for four weeks in September 2014 and work with our team of experienced lawyers.

To take part, you simply need to review one of the following case summaries and draft a response to clients. The best response will be chosen for its demonstration of legal knowledge, commercial professionalism and creativity of response.

Good luck!

Eligibility
Open to all students and young professionals.

Topic
Please choose one of the two following case studies and write an answer to the client.

The client
Our new client, the Irish Internet Consultancy Group is a globally acting internet service provider. Mark Sugarmountain, the founder, owner and CEO of Irish Internet Consultancy Group, is asking for your advice regarding the following issues relating to Austrian Law:

1. Corporate and Trade Law
Irish Internet Consultancy Group wants to expand its empire to Austria. For that purpose Mark aims to incorporate a separate subsidiary in the form of a “GmbH light” in Austria. Mark wants to know how to form a “GmbH light” in Austria and whether he needs any additional licence to conduct his business. Please provide Mark with a memorandum regarding his questions.

2. TMT – New Media
In a recent newspaper article Mark has read that 29% of Austrians use Facebook at work every day. Mark is afraid that people may spend more time surfing online, “liking” their friends’ Facebook pictures instead of doing the job they are paid for. Therefore, he intends establishing a social media policy for his new company before hiring his first employees. Please provide Mark with a memorandum, pointing out the options he has, including the solution you would recommend.

Submission requirements
Entries must be original, unpublished work and should be between 800-1200 words. However, if an entry extends slightly beyond the word limit, it will not be categorically rejected. The definition of “slightly” is left to the evaluator’s discretion and compliance with the word limit is a factor whose weight will vary depending upon the evaluator.
There is no entry form of any kind. A title page should be attached and must contain the title of the submission, the student’s name, and the student’s contact information including street address, phone number(s), and e-mail address. Please enclose your curriculum vitae.

Award
Submissions will be blindly evaluated by a committee of Eversheds Austria. The author of the best entry as judged by the selection committee will be awarded a paid internship for four weeks in September 2014 at Eversheds Austria (Vienna). If the winner agrees, the essay will be published on our website. Entries will be judged on demonstration of legal knowledge, commercial professionalism and creativity of response.

Date
All entries must be postmarked or e-mailed by 25 April 2014.
Send entries and curriculum vitae to: internship@eversheds.at
