Principal Associate
Matt is an experienced litigator who helps his clients to resolve complex disputes, particularly in relation to technology, communications, privacy, data and cybersecurity.

A Principal Associate in Eversheds Sutherland’s Litigation and Dispute Management group, Matt helps his clients to navigate their most commercially sensitive and technically complex challenges, including in particular disputes in relation to technology, media and telecommunications (TMT), information and computer technology, data, privacy, information and cybersecurity. His focus is on achieving effective, efficient and commercial resolutions for his clients—whether that means leading hard-fought litigation, obtaining injunctions and other urgent relief, or guiding his clients through alternative dispute resolution methods such as arbitration, mediation and without prejudice negotiation.

Matt represents clients both supplier-side and customer-side—whether operating in the TMT sector, or operating outside the TMT sector but facing the prospect of a TMT-related dispute—on diverse issues covering a broad range of technology and data-related issues. He is regularly instructed by clients both UK-based and global, both private and public sector, on their most complex and high-value disputes involving large-scale, multi-party technology projects. This includes (for example) disputes relating to transformational outsourced/managed information and computer technology services; data centre and systems outages; software licensing; technology, software and hardware development; cybersecurity and data; and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Matt's practice has a particular focus on litigation relating to information security and data. His experience includes cybersecurity response (from initial incident management and response, to injunctive relief and subsequent litigation), as well as defending threatened and actual group litigation and litigation by commercial parties and data subjects arising out of data breach incidents. He regularly provides strategic advice, before or after litigation arises, to businesses affected by multi-jurisdictional cybersecurity, ransomware and data security incidents (whether they are the victim of the incident, a supplier alleged to be at fault, or an impacted third party) and his experience includes legal proceedings against external suppliers, third parties and employees; obtaining urgent injunctive relief; advising on cyber litigation risk in connection with corporate transactions and insolvency; and developing and implementing defence strategies in response to large-scale data protection, information law and privacy incidents and mass-litigation risk.

Matt’s recent experience includes:

  • acting for multiple corporate clients on the defence of group litigation in the High Court relating to alleged breaches of information law
  • acting for a US-headquartered global IT services business on a series of high-value, complex ICT outsourcing disputes with both private- and public-sector customers

  • regularly acting for a number of global and national clients in the technology, retail and education sectors in relation to internal and external data- and system-security breaches and associated claims
  • advising a number of public and private organizations, both licensors and licensees, on GBP multi-million software licensing disputes
  • Matt was described in Legal 500 2024 as “absolutely excellent and a rising star – very technically minded, great to work with and practical
