Helen Westman

Partner

Helen is a partner in the litigation department at our Melrose Arch office. She has Right of Appearance in the High Court of South Africa.

Helen has served as the Registrar to the Honourable Ms Justice Satchwell at the South Gauteng High Court where she managed chambers, assisted with legal research, and gained valuable insight into the administration of motion court, urgent applications, civil and criminal trials and appeals.

Helen has a particular interest in construction law, insolvency law, business rescues, competition law and corporate law. Her practice experience includes advising clients on various aspects of commercial law and general litigation where she has represented individuals, as well as corporate clients, in both the Supreme Court of Appeal, the High Court and the Magistrate Court. Helen has also represented clients in complex construction arbitrations and commercial arbitrations.

Helen has an interest in employment law and has provided training to international and local clients, drafted various policies and procedures, as well as employment contracts and restraint of trade agreements. Helen has appeared in the CCMA and Labour Court and chaired numerous disciplinary and incapacity hearings on behalf of clients.

Her experience extends beyond South Africa’s borders in that she also manages a variety of litigious matters throughout Africa on behalf of clients. Examples of her experience includes:

  • Representing a client at a virtual mediation, spanning over two days, which involved 6 parties and numerous disputes amounting to approximately one hundred million Rand.
  • Representing major tertiary institutions in regard to employment matters and internal investigations.
  • Part of the team that represented a client in the security industry and recently appointed employee of theirs against a restraint of trade.

As a way of giving back to the community, Helen attends at the SASLAW pro bono office situated at the Labour Court and provides legal assistance to individuals that cannot afford legal representation.

Helen Westman holds an LLM degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, and LLB and BCom degree at the University of Johannesburg. 

She also has an advanced short course certificate in business rescue from the University of South Africa.
