UK Chemicals Strategy and UK REACH

DERFA has provided updates on the long-awaited UK Chemicals Strategy over the past few weeks and opportunities for stakeholder input. 

There is still no set date for when the UK Chemicals Strategy will be issued nor when a draft will be made available. 

A DEFRA representative has stated that it is intended that the Strategy will be UK-wide, which will require the agreement of the Devolved Administrations. DEFRA hosted a roundtable on Wednesday 27 April 2022, chaired by Jo Churchill which will help inform the Strategy. 

Workshops with stakeholders will then be held from late spring to Summer 2022 on a number of issues relevant to the Strategy including tacking priority and future chemical risks and the regulatory framework. Those interested in joining any of the workshops should contact DEFRA. 

UK REACH – James Dancy of DEFRA stated at a conference on 26 April 2022 that the proposed consultation on extending the UK REACH registration deadlines to provide the full data package is expected to take place by Summer 2022. He also confirmed that DEFRA remains committed to exploring alternative arrangements to providing the full EU REACH data packaging.
