Changes to employee food and travel allowances

The Labour Code requires an employer to provide employees with a catering allowance. This is set at 55% of the price of food and not exceeding 55% of the catering fee set by the government.

On 1 June 2018, the government set the catering fee for employees at EUR 4.80, meaning that employers must provide employees with an allowance in the amount of 55% of this feet.

An employee is entitled to this allowance should he/she work at least 4 hours per shift. Should the shift last more than 11 hours, the employee may be entitled to another allowance.

Employees on business trips are also entitled to a catering allowance paid by the employer. The amount depends on the duration of the business trip per calendar day. From 1 June 2018 the amounts of allowance are as follows:

  • EUR 4.80 for a business trip lasting from 5 to 12 hours
  • EUR 7.10 for a business trip lasting from 12 to 18 hours
  • EUR 10.90 for a business trip lasting over 18 hours

On 1 June 2018 the travelling to work allowance was amended. The monthly allowance depends on the distance of the place of work from the employee´s temporary or permanent residence and is as follows:

  • from 1 km to 4 km is at most EUR 15
  • from 4 km to 10 km is at most EUR 30
  • from 10 km to 20 km is at most EUR 40
  • from 20 km to 30 km is at most EUR 60
  • from 30 km to 40 km is at most EUR 75
  • from 40 km to 50 km is at most EUR 80
  • from 50 km to 60 km is at most EUR 95
  • from 60 km to 80 km is at most EUR 105
  • from 80 km to 100 km is at most EUR 125
  • from 100 km to 150 km is at most EUR 150
  • from 150 km to 200 km is at most EUR 185
  • from 200 km is at most EUR 200

The allowance is paid to the employee by the respective Labour Office. An employee is entitled to the allowance should he/she have been unemployed at least 3 months and is willing to travel to work. The allowance is paid monthly for a maximum 6 months.
