Government acts to stop strikes

Tunisia is suffering an economic slowdown resulting from unrest that has hit the country since the 2011 and the recent militant attacks on tourists.

Against this background, in an effort to reduce the number of public sector strikes which are detrimentally impacting all businesses operating in Tunisia, the Government has decided to limit pay during strikes. The measure permits the non-payment of state employees’ salaries on the days they participate in a strike, whether it is lawful or not. This decision came into force from July 2015.

However, it should be noted that this action could be counter-productive, given the fierce opposition from parties involved in recent strikes - namely government employees and trade unions.
