Jordan increases solar target to 1 GW by 2020
The government of Jordan plans to increase its solar energy target by over 65% by 2020, the National reported today, citing the country’s Energy Minister.
According to Ibrahim Saif, the country is expected to bring online 500 MW of new solar capacity by the end of next year, which will significantly contribute to the new solar target of 1 GW by 2020 from the initial 600 MW goal.
The move to boost the solar capacity comes as the Jordanian government looks to reduce its dependence on energy imports, which are expected to cost about $3.6 billion, or 14% of the country’s GDP.
Jordan’s overall clean energy goal includes a target to deploy 1.8 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2020, which would make up 10% of Jordan’s energy supply.
Eversheds advised on 10 of the R1 projects and are advising on wheeling projects.
