MENA: Eversheds Sutherland Strengthens its Clean Energy and Sustainability team in Dubai

16-07-2018

As the MENA region continues to cement its position in the global clean energy market, we are delighted to announce that clean energy corporate partner Iwan Walters has joined our Dubai office. Dubai is increasingly a capital hub not only for investment in the region but also for investments in other global markets.

We have one of the largest teams in MENA and continue to invest. The team is based across eight offices in six countries - Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Riyadh, Amman, Doha, Baghdad and Erbil, and Tunis.

Iwan has been working for clients based in the MENA region for many years.
As one of Eversheds Sutherland’s leading clean energy and sustainability lawyers, he has advised on the development of renewables work in the MENA region, including Egypt, Oman, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

His experience includes working on eight projects in the Egyptian FIT programme, advising a bidding consortium on the DAJ 400MW wind programme in Saudi Arabia and advising a leading Saudi conglomerate on the Noor CSP solar programme in Morocco. Further afield, Iwan recently advised Shell on its acquisition of First Utility, a leading energy supply business, EDF Energy on its disposal of a majority stake in five operating on shore wind farms and Greencoat Capital on the acquisition of the largest solar PV portfolio in Europe.

Iwan comments: “Clean energy projects require a degree of global consistency and our clients and their investors expect us, in all our work, to incorporate best approaches and lessons learnt from other markets, as well as understanding the dynamics of local markets. I am delighted to have joined such a strong team across MENA and to be able to help our clients achieve success in a highly competitive but growing sector. One of my key roles is to help our clients achieve their IRR targets whilst at the same time managing risk appropriately. I look forward to continuing to utilise my understanding of structures deployed globally for the benefit of our clients in this region”.

Team partners include Clint Dempsey, Paul Taylor, Shalagh Massingham, Iyad Zawaideh, Muhammad Arif Saeed, Dani Kabbani, Richard Ward, Tawfiq Tabbaa and Farès Koussay El Heni.

Karim Mahmud has also recently joined our Dubai team. Karim’s focus is on wider infrastructure and conventional power.
