On 3 April 2019, Energy and Infrastructure partner Stephen Hill provided oral evidence to the UK Foreign Affairs Select Committee reviewing Global Britain and South America.

The Foreign Affairs Select Committee, a cross-party group of 11 UK MPs, is exploring the country’s trade links with South America and considering how the Government can encourage greater investment.

Stephen, who leads our Energy & Infrastructure Group in Latin America, was called to give evidence following the ‘Canning House Renewable Energy in Latin America’ conference hosted in our London office on 14 March. Stephen’s recent transactions in Latin America include advising:

• the acquisition of a significant wind and solar portfolio in Brazil;

• the acquisition of a major onshore wind portfolio in Brazil by a Chinese state-owned enterprise; and

• Faro Energy on the first certified Green Bond for solar energy in Colombia and Brazil.

Stephen commented: “The Foreign Affairs Select Committee is doing important work on expanding the trade relationships with South America, and I was delighted to be invited as a thought leader to contribute. Global, including UK, investment is flowing into South America and businesses need to be educated about the opportunities that exist. Government bodies in the UK and South America can assist with this by acting collectively. The UK has a strong business brand and rule of law, and this should be capitalised on.”
