The Chancery Lane Project – tackling climate change together!

18-03-2020
Eversheds Sutherland was delighted to be involved in a project to develop proforma clauses and model laws looking to tackle climate change. The Chancery Lane Project involved 143 participants from 63 organisations, including law firms, climate change research groups and educational establishments coming together to develop contractual provisions to ensure everyone is taking steps to minimise the impact of climate change.
The precedent clauses and proposed legislative changes were launched in February 2020 and represent the legal industry’s response to the UK Government’s 2050 net zero emissions target being enacted into law. Achieving a net zero target will be challenging, however these precedent clauses encourage companies to consider ways to incorporate ‘greener’ thinking into their contracts.
The project also identified supplementary clauses to be considered in the future, and we look forward to further involvement in the development of ways to tackle the impact of climate change through contractual and legislative mechanisms.

Eversheds Sutherland has separately developed a working suite of processes and documents to not only help protect our clients against the physical and economic impacts of climate change but also to take advantage of opportunities especially around cost reduction and green finance.
