The end of December 2019 saw the next step in the EU’s commitment to the adoption of a circular economy as the EU Commission published a road map on a new action plan which aims to speed up the transition to a circular economy.

The new plan is intended to preserve the natural environment and to help the EU move to being a climate neutral continent.

The plan will:

  • include a sustainable products policy to boost design, production and marketing of sustainable products; there will be more focus on reuse and repair over recycling;
  • include measures to provide consumers with reliable, verifiable and comparable information on a product’s sustainability features and tackle false green claims;
  • support the modernisation of certain waste laws including addressing the need to increase the amount of waste treated domestically; and
  • foster a well-functioning market for secondary raw materials.

The plan will also focus on high impact sectors such as textiles, construction and electronics.

Read the road map is out for consultation until 20 January 2020.
