From April till October, a lawyer from our office, Artis Straupenieks, together with his team from the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, participated in an international competition on protection of foreign direct investment in arbitration. The competition simulated a dispute resolution between a state and an investor in international arbitration proceedings. The dispute concerned an issue whether a state, by adopting laws limiting marketing and sale of alcoholic beverages, has violated the applicable inter-state investment protection treaty and whether the investor is entitled to claim from the state damages suffered due to the newly adopted laws. As a result, the team won an award for the second best respondent’s memorial, which has recently been published in Transnational Dispute Management, an internationally renowned online journal among professionals in the field.
