In May 2017 health care providers in the United Kingdom were caught up in a massive international ransomware attack dubbed WannaCry. For over 30 years, the international oil and gas industry has been targeted by cyber-attacks — and the attacks are only getting more frequent, more sophisticated, and more aggressive. The world has become increasingly reliant on technology, attackers have become more capable, and geo-political tensions have risen. The devastating cyber-attacks on oil and gas companies in the Middle East in 2012 and again in 2016/7, the attacks on the Ukrainian power grids in 2015 and 2017, and the discovery of the foreign-implanted malware in the US critical infrastructure sector, has highlighted this increasing risk.
