Public-private partnership seminar in London

  • Poland

    18-06-2012

Our law firm once again organized a seminar in London entitled “PPP in Poland,” together with Eversheds LLP and the Trade & Investment Promotion Section of the Polish Embassy in London. The main purpose of the seminar was to promote projects planned for implementation in Polish cities using the public-private partnership model.

Over 100 companies interested in PPP projects in Poland, including investors, banks, contractors and advisers, took part in the event, which was held on 31 May 2012 at Eversheds’ London offices.

Projects were presented by the cities of Elbląg, Łódź, Poznań, Sopot, Warsaw and Wrocław, and by the provinces of Małopolska and Lower Silesia.

The seminar was honoured by the participation of Polish Ambassador to the UK Barbara Tuge-Erecińska and by Jessica Glover, Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General at the British Embassy in Warsaw.

On the second day of the seminar, regional and local government officials from Poland had an opportunity to witness the practical aspects of implementing projects using the PPP model with a visit to one such project in London, North Finchley Memorial Hospital.

Jan Dziekański, director of the Department of Structural Financing at Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, said after the event: “It was a good idea to present to British investors and banks the opportunities associated with PPP in Poland. The projects discussed, and opportunities for financing them, met with a great deal of interest among the British guests. This was particularly evident during the discussions following the presentations, when we fielded numerous questions concerning PPP in Poland and opportunities for debt financing of such projects. The event was very well-organized and received many positive evaluations. It was an excellent occasion for BGK to showcase its work in this area.”

Bartosz Mysiorski, Chief PPP Specialist at the PPP Centre Foundation, commented: “Events of this type are certainly necessary and—like public-private partnerships as such—are a win/win proposition: for the public authorities, as an excellent tool for promoting their own initiatives and a unique opportunity to consult with potential private partners about planned ventures, for the private sector, which can learn about interesting PPP projects in the pipeline, and, finally, for advisers and lenders, who play a key role when it comes to actual preparation and effective implementation of PPP projects. Seminars of this type make it possible to form invaluable contacts and build relations that later help carry out projects using the PPP model. The seminar at Eversheds in London brought together decision-makers on the public side with high-level individuals in the private sector. It was an excellent initiative in terms of the well-organized seminar portion and the interesting visit the next day to a hospital being built under the PPP model. The initiative should be continued.”

Wierzbowski Eversheds was represented at the seminar by Krzysztof Wierzbowski, Arwid Mednis, Tomasz Korczyński, Anna Ochocka and Jakub Sikora.
