It was reported on 1 September 2017 that the EU has rejected Britain’s calls for a more flexible approach to Brexit talks.  The EU’s chief negotiator Michael Barnier stated that the talks are being held up by the UK’s decision not to publish a position paper on the financial settlement. He said “To be flexible you need two points, our point and their point… We need to know their position and then I can be flexible.” During the latest talks the UK is refusing to publish what it sees as its financial obligations to the EU.
