EU – UK Trade Deal far from a reality

  • Ireland
  • General

On 23 August 2017 it was reported that the chances of a trade deal between the EU and the UK are quickly dissipating due to the gross difference in the stance adopted by each. It was reported that the UK has repeatedly reiterated that its main goal is to secure a new trade deal with the EU however there is a clash of priorities. The UK hopes to prioritise settling the customs issue and the Irish border however the EU has made it clear it will not move on to the next round of negotiations until the first has been finalised – that is the financial settlement and citizens’ rights.
