On 16 October Theresa May met with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker amid reports of a “deadlock” in negotiations. No further progress was reached, with both sides issuing statements that reflected their previous stances.

On 19 and 20 October there will be a summit of the EU Council. Reports indicate that it is unlikely that talks will be cleared to proceed to phase 2 (trade discussions).

Meanwhile the Governor of the Bank of England has warned that without a transitional deal being reached soon, banks will have to start moving staff from the UK in early 2018.
