UK Government defeated on Brexit Bill in the House of Lords

  • Ireland
  • General

The British Government has suffered a damaging defeat in the House of Lords over its plan to start negotiations on leaving the European Union at the end of this month.

Peers ignored stern warnings not to amend the Brexit Bill, and backed a Labour-led move to guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in the UK by a majority of 358 to 256.

The defeat means the bill, which was passed unamended by the House of Commons, will now have to return there for further consideration by MPs.

However, MPs will be able to remove their changes when the bill returns to the House of Commons.
