UK plan to restrict immigration

  • Ireland
  • General

It was reported on 6 September 2017 that a UK Home Office document outlining ways to restrict immigration has been leaked. The 82 page document, obtained by The Guardian newspaper reportedly suggests that new immigration arrangements would be introduced immediately at the point the UK finally leaves the EU after the initial transition period. The document states “the Government will take a view on the economic and social needs of the country as regards EU migration, rather than leaving this decision entirely to those wishing to come here and employers”. It has also been reported that the UK proposes to cut the number of lower-skilled migrants and instead to look to meet labour needs from resident labour.
