Eversheds Sutherland Continues US Expansion with New California Office

  • Latvia

Eversheds Sutherland has opened a San Diego office with the addition of three leading Intellectual Property (IP) litigators: Nicola Pisano, Jose Patino and Christopher Bolten, who will join the Firm as partners in the next few weeks. The group brings highly sophisticated and established multinational practices focused on IP patent litigation, patent prosecution and IP due diligence.

“We are thrilled to welcome Nick, Joe and Chris to our team,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Co-CEO of Eversheds Sutherland. “Intellectual property protection and defense is an ever-growing concern for our clients around the globe. With the addition of this strong group, we are uniquely positioned to meet the changing needs of our clients with an agile, full-service suite of IP offerings throughout the world.”

Eversheds Sutherland is one of a very small number of global commercial law firms that can boast a worldwide IP reach, and the addition of this IP patent litigation and prosecution team further separates the Firm from most, if not all, global law firms that traditionally have larger trademark than patent service offerings.

“Deepening and broadening the geographic presence of our patent litigation team is key to growing our already extensive global IP practice,” said Partner Pete G. Pappas, Co-Head of Global Intellectual Property. “Now that we are physically located in one of the world’s premier life sciences and biotech industry hubs and have the combined experience of these terrific attorneys, we are moving closer to our goal of having the strongest, most fully capable IP team on the globe.”

Having just opened a Chicago office in May, San Diego marks the second new US office for Eversheds Sutherland in 2019 bringing the Firm’s total offices to 69 (8 in the US) in 34 jurisdictions. These offices, in combination with Eversheds Sutherland’s unparalleled managed network of relationship firms, give Eversheds Sutherland reach, including IP, into more than 200 jurisdictions worldwide. The Firm has had an office in Sacramento since 2011.

We have been looking to expand on the West Coast for a long time but were waiting for the right opportunity,” said Mr. Wasserman. “Nearly all of our clients, both in the US and internationally, have interests in the region. Strengthening our presence in California is in line with our focus on growing strategically to meet client needs. We could not be more excited to have this talented IP team join our Firm.”

The Eversheds Sutherland San Diego office will be located at Paseo del Mar at 12255 El Camino Real, a nearly 13,000 square foot space that can accommodate the Firm’s anticipated growth, which is expected both in San Diego and in California generally.

    About the Lawyers

Nicola Pisano focuses his practice on complex patent litigation as well as patent counseling and prosecution for emerging company clients. He has litigated patent and trade secret matters in federal district courts throughout the United States and in interference proceedings before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Mr. Pisano also has extensive experience procuring patents relating to diverse technical fields, including life science, software, wireless communications, telephony, network, semiconductor, and a vast array of medical device technology spaces.

Jose Patino has a robust patent litigation practice, representing prominent companies in high-stakes intellectual property disputes. He has argued before the courts of 20 different states and has extensive experience with patent litigation-specific proceedings, including before the International Trade Commission, and as special intellectual property counsel in US Bankruptcy Court.

Christopher Bolten focuses his practice on patent litigation and patent prosecution, with a focus on clients in the medical device industry (ultrasound and X-ray imagers, neuro-stimulation systems, implantable mechanical devices, ablation devices, wound dressings and medicine dispensers), telecommunications (cellular and internet technologies), aerospace and defense technologies (signal processing and optical systems) and automotive technologies (battery systems). He also prepares non-infringement, invalidity, patentability and freedom-to-operate opinions.

About the Intellectual Property Practice Group

Eversheds Sutherland’s Intellectual Property Practice Group represents clients in all areas of IP, including enforcement, litigation and other contested proceedings, trademark and patent prosecution, and transaction due diligence, negotiation and drafting. The IP litigation team has tried cases in US and overseas courts, arbitration and mediation inside and outside the United States and administrative proceedings before the US International Trade Commission (ITC), the USPTO and international patent offices. Eversheds Sutherland IP lawyers have won important rulings both affirming and reversing lower court decisions in state and federal appellate courts, including the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

The additions of Mr. Pisano, Mr. Patino and Mr. Bolten in San Diego is the latest step in Eversheds Sutherland’s strategic plan to globally expand the Intellectual Property Practice Group. This past year, the IP team has grown by 12% with the addition of experienced attorneys in key jurisdictions throughout the world—specifically two IP trial lawyers in Texas, a five-person (and building) IP full service team in Greater China, a five-person IP team in The Netherlands, and two additional IP attorneys in Russia.
