Eversheds Sutherland advises on the creation of UK’s newest university

Eversheds Sutherland has advised on the creation of Hartpury University – the first to be founded in the UK under the current Government following the introduction of the Higher Education and Research Act 2017.

Based in Gloucester, Hartpury has been an educational institution for over 70 years and is best known for its sports, equine, agricultural and veterinary courses. It has produced over 150 sporting internationals over the last 10 years including the Welsh rugby players Alex Cuthbert and Ross Moriarty.

This University is innovative in being a separate institution from a further education college, but all within one unified group so that students can benefit from both higher and further education courses.

The model, which involved extensive interaction with the Department for Education and Privy Council, is the culmination of over two years’ work.

Glynne Stanfield, Partner and head of Eversheds Sutherland's Corporate and International Education practice, said:

“We are extremely proud to have been involved in such a novel, complex and interesting project. We wish Hartpury every success in its future growth and expansion.”

Russel Marchant, the founding Vice Chancellor and Principal of Hartpury, said:

“We are very grateful for the support from Eversheds Sutherland. They very professionally guided us through some challenging and at times complex legal issues. We are delighted at the support we received from them and the outcome.”
