Eversheds Sutherland assists ITSO with ground-breaking smart ticketing project

Eversheds Sutherland has assisted ITSO on a series of interconnected deals to embed the use of ITSO’s UK-wide secure authentication ticketing technology onto mobile. The team’s work on the complex Internet of Things project has helped shape market-ready, future-proof contracts for use with transport operating companies.

ITSO’s cloud-based transit hub will help transform journeys for public transport users in the UK and beyond, with the aim that the ground-breaking technology will be a key part of the UK Government’s £80 million programme to introduce smart ticketing across England and Wales by the end of 2018. ITSO currently offers a UK-wide, inter-operable solution for public transport and has continued to deliver ITSO smartcard services to an increasing number of passengers (two billion+ journeys per year prior to this mobile project) which is expected to grow significantly.

In collaboration with a global technology provider and a number of early adopters from train and bus companies, ITSO has developed a solution that will help bring all of the benefits of its national smartcard to mobile.

    A game-changer…

Passengers will be able to securely plan journeys, buy tickets and access multiple modes of transport virtually using mobile, with secure authentication. Its’ usability brings the ability to deploy economically viable interoperable smart-ticketing to train, bus and tram routes and metro operations, which run multiple times a day, as well as to large scale train routes.

The multi-jurisdictional Eversheds Sutherland team was led by Partner and Global Head of Technology Sector, Charlotte Walker-Osborn, with support from commercial Partner Anne Harris, and Global Co-Lead of Privacy & Cyber Security Law, Paula Barrett. The team advised ITSO on all of its complex arrangements across the UK and France including company/corporate, technology, cyber, privacy, insurance, insolvency, intellectual property and media aspects.

The project has led to Eversheds Sutherland being nominated for TMT Team of the Year and Commercial Team of the Year at the British Legal Awards 2018.

    Charlotte Walker-Osborn commented:

“Drawing on Eversheds Sutherland’s commercial experience and industry-rich knowledge across technology and transport as well as our strong global privacy & cyber security practice, we successfully acted as an agile extension of ITSO’s in-house capability. The team ensured that ITSO was able to meet its deadlines with fit for purpose end-to-end contracts and was well-equipped to negotiate and work collaboratively with its suppliers and customers.”

Steve Wakeland, Director, ITSO Transit Hub Limited, commented:

“The team brought a high degree of expertise and pragmatism, ensuring we achieved the desired outcome, the supplier needs were taken into consideration, and the overall viability of the service solution was preserved. The Eversheds Sutherland team provided a refreshing bridge from the project’s technical requirements through to detailed service levels into complex commercials. The outcome achieved was a win-win for all parties with a strong working relationship developed.”
