Trio strengthen financial products and payments offering

Eversheds Sutherland has strengthened its financial products and payments offering with Partner Tony Anderson, Associate Charlie Clarence-Smith and Consultant Henry Burkitt. All three join Eversheds Sutherland later this month from Pinsent Masons, where Tony led the Financial Products and Payments team.

Tony is highly experienced in all aspects of payments work including product portfolio reviews and remediation, liquidity and debt finance transactions and payment, settlement and clearing structures and regulation.

Described by the Legal 500 as having “an excellent pedigree for payments work”, Tony has handled several significant mandates for banks on the development of innovative solutions in the payments space. This includes distributed ledger technology (DLT), cryptocurrency applications and initial coin offerings as well as advice on Banking Reform and Brexit.

Recent mandates include advising all of the settlement banks on negotiations involving Euroclear, the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve Bank on changes to the funding of US Dollar liquidity on to the CREST settlement system. His team also advised a number of banks on changes to SEPA and TARGET2 membership arising from Banking Reform and Brexit.

Charlie Clarence-Smith has extensive knowledge of payment products, payment accounts, payment services, cryptoassets and DLT. He recently completed a secondment at a major bank involving a number of workstreams particularly in relation to PSD2 fraud reporting requirements, the RTS-SCA dedicated interface exemption and the New Payments System Operator.

Henry Burkitt has a wealth of experience advising banks on lending structures, financial products, payments and clearing and settlement systems.

Richard Jones, Partner and Head of Eversheds Sutherland’s International Payment Services Group, commented:

“I am delighted to welcome Tony, Charlie and Henry to Eversheds Sutherland’s Payment Services team. All three are highly experienced and regarded in this area and their addition to the team provides us with the critical mass to undertake major projects in all areas of the payments ecosystem.”

    Tony Anderson commented:

“There are significant challenges to the financial services sector including Banking Reform, Brexit, Fintech, cryptocurrencies and DLT, to name just a few.

“Eversheds Sutherland’s impressive global platform offers the perfect opportunity to better serve clients as they navigate these challenges as well as the chance for us to grow this area of the business by winning more cross-border work – particularly in the US. Charlie, Henry and I are excited to start working with Richard and the team to offer a deeper, broader platform in the payments, financial regulation and fintech space.”
