Two new key appointments to support the UK’s largest water and wastewater services company

Eversheds Sutherland is delighted to announce that is has successfully won the tender to provide legal services for Thames Water.

Our contract with Thames Water will include the provision of legal services for both its operational activity and inclusion on the company’s new legal panel. Both contracts will operate for five years, starting on 1 April 2018, with the option for Thames Water to extend for a further three years.

The operational activity is handled under a managed legal services agreement and will see the existing Reading-based legal team from Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP insourced to become part of the wider Eversheds Sutherland legal team. This team will focus on supporting Thames Water’s Head of Legal, Sarah Sear, and the Thames Water business on a range of legal advice including competition activity, projects and planning, regulation, construction, real estate, commercial contracts, tax matters, disputes, energy, employment and health and safety, amongst other work.

Additionally, Eversheds Sutherland has been appointed to the new Thames Water legal panel - alongside Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP, CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP, Herbert Smith Freehills LLP and Pinsent Masons LLP - to advise on major projects for the business, which sit outside of the managed legal services arrangement.

Simon Oats, Eversheds Sutherland Partner who led the procurement process comments:

“The provision of legal services to Thames Water is an outstanding client win and we are delighted to be able to work closely with, and support, Sarah Sear and her team over the coming years. The feedback from Thames on our tender process highlighted our quality of service, our approach to transitioning Berwin Leighton Paisner’s Thames Water expert legal team to Eversheds Sutherland, and the technical legal innovations we will bring to the contract to enhance client service. Of particular note is the great cultural fit between our two businesses and we look forward to getting started next year.”

Sarah Sear, Head of Legal at Thames Water comments:

“Our managed legal services model has worked very well since we launched it in 2010 and, after a rigorous tender process, we’re delighted to appoint Eversheds Sutherland as our new legal services provider for the next five years. As an essential services company, it’s absolutely vital that we get things right and Eversheds Sutherland is very much aligned with our thinking as we embrace the next chapter.”

Lee Ranson, CEO, Eversheds Sutherland (International) comments:

“Securing work of this size and complexity has been one of the highlights of our year at Eversheds Sutherland, and has increased significantly since our transatlantic tie-up on 1 February. We were able to demonstrate to Thames the difference in our innovative and creative approach to managing complex, high value legal services for our clients – such as our client relationships with IATA, Tyco and Turkish Airlines - to meet the extremely high benchmark set by the tender process.”
