Eversheds Sutherland has completed ID Manchester, a c.£1.5 billion global-leading innovation district, for the University of Manchester.
ID Manchester is a 11.8 hectare site which was identified as a transformational strategic development site by the University. The University’s vision is to create a dynamic community with innovation, collaboration and enterprise at its heart.
The redevelopment involves the creation of a c.£1.5 billion world-class innovation district and major mixed use scheme with opportunities for office, residential, retail, leisure, hotels and research and development.
The opportunity was launched to the market in September 2019 and the University completed its competitive dialogue procurement process to seek an investor and development partner and appointed Bruntwood Sci-Tech in 2021.
Eversheds Sutherland was instructed by the University from the outset of the project in September 2017 and has advised on all aspects including in relation to delivery options, structuring the joint venture arrangements, real estate, procurement, corporate and commercial matters, vires, governance and charities law.
The Eversheds Sutherland multi-disciplinary team was led by Partner Kuljeet Gill, assisted by Partner Liz Marshall (procurement), Legal Director Ian Barker (real estate), Legal Director Tracy Gibson (real estate) and Associates Charlotte Tanikal (real estate), Sasha Fasolilli, Laura Nally and Lara Davies (all commercial).
Kuljeet Gill, Eversheds Sutherland, said:
“We’re thrilled to have supported the University of Manchester on such a game-changing and notable project for both the University and the city of Manchester. It’s most certainly a milestone, providing the newly formed Joint Venture and the University with the framework to deliver what will be an exceptional development at ID Manchester. Congratulations to all those involved!”
Diana Hampson, The University of Manchester said:
“Eversheds Sutherland has been outstanding, supporting us each step of the way over several years, and providing an impressive level of service delivery and legal technical excellence at every point. The team has become an extension of our own, drawing on its comprehensive understanding of our strategic objectives and delivering above expectation. We’re delighted and look forward to continuing our work with them.”
Kuljeet was recently listed by legal industry publication, The Lawyer, as one of its coveted ‘Hot 100’ – an accolade given annually to those recognised by the publication as the most daring, innovative and creative lawyers from in-house, private practice and the Bar.
Kuljeet was described in the Lawyer’s ‘Hot 100’ write-up as: “…The leading light of the firm’s [Eversheds Sutherland] niche sector group dubbed ‘Governments and Strategic Projects’.”
