Eversheds Sutherland Partner honoured by PM on World Cancer Day for outstanding cancer fundraising

Eversheds Sutherland Partner Paul Verrico has been honoured by the Prime Minister today – World Cancer Day – with a special ‘Points of Light’ award.

The award recognises outstanding volunteers who are making a change in their community and inspiring others. Paul has raised over £500,000 in five years to support cancer patients and their families with medical, psychological and practical assistance, as well as funding research into the most aggressive forms of cancer.

After Paul’s wife Anna died from triple negative breast cancer in 2013 when their children were aged one and three, Paul decided to set up the charity ‘Team Verrico’ with the support of family, friends and Eversheds Sutherland, to build on Anna’s legacy of fundraising for cancer research and support.

Eversheds Sutherland has supported the fledgling charity from the very beginning, with colleagues taking part in various sponsored activities to raise funds and the RICOH Print room at the global legal practice producing charity literature free of charge.

Paul combines his work at Eversheds Sutherland with a volunteer role at ‘Team Verrico,’ which focuses on helping families with children when a parent gets cancer.

In a personal letter to Paul, Prime Minister Theresa May said:

“The extraordinary amount of money you have raised is a remarkable tribute to your late wife, Anna. The support you provide for patients and their families is invaluable and you should feel very proud of the legacy you are creating. It is especially important, on World Cancer Day, to recognise the incredibly positive impact your work is having on so many families across the UK. I wish you, your family, and Team Verrico the very best as you continue your efforts.”

Paul Cotton, Senior Office Partner, Eversheds Sutherland, Leeds said:

“Put simply, Paul is an inspiration to us all. His bravery and incredible tenacity to bring positivity to such tragic and personal circumstances illustrates his strength of character. Paul is a credit to the firm, his colleagues, his friends and family and we look forward to continuing to do all we can to support him and Team Verrico.”

    Paul Verrico said:

“Eversheds Sutherland has been an incredible support through the darkest of times. Coming to work was my ‘safe space’ in a world turned suddenly upside down by tragedy and the gift of time, patience and solidarity enabled me to have the ability to develop the charity into what it is now.”

A global team from Eversheds Sutherland has enrolled in the Berlin Marathon in September 2019 in support of Team Verrico.

Patrick Davis, Partner at the global legal practice and who is leading the team, added:

“This is a wonderful achievement and recognition for Paul and the whole of Team Verrico. Choosing to support the charity, and one of our colleagues, with our run this year was an easy decision and a small contribution to their incredible efforts.”
