Eversheds comment: Europe-wide approach on plastic bag use a step in the right direction

  • United Kingdom

Commenting as the EU prepares to announce a proposal to limit single use plastic shopping bags, Michael Grimes, waste regulation expert at global law firm Eversheds, says:

"The debate on controlling the use of single use shopping bags has been rumbling on for several years. A single Europe-wide approach should be welcomed as part of a wider drive to increase consumer awareness of environmental choices and should nudge us towards the best practices of consumers in countries like Denmark. Keeping and carrying shopping bags may seem like a tiny step but anything to reduce the hundred billion bags used annually will be a step in the right direction."
