Eversheds comment: Dampened consumer confidence impacts UK retail sales

  • United Kingdom

    15-02-2013

With UK retail figures revealing a surprise fall in sales during January 2013, Paul Moorcroft, head of real estate litigation at global law firm Eversheds, comments:

"The speculation of a flood of big name retail insolvencies that we always get prior to any rent quarter day rarely seems to materialise. However, it has this time and no one seems that surprised at the names who have gone. There will surely be more to come and, whilst it is not all doom and gloom, this all serves to dampen consumer confidence and impact on sales.

"Presumably, we will soon need to accept that some high streets cannot be revived with a traditional retail offering, and the focus will then be upon how to revamp empty buildings through other uses such as leisure and residential."
