Eversheds comment: Nationalising unused UK development land would bring a wave of compensation claims

  • United Kingdom

In light of today's comments from Ed Miliband that a Labour administration would get tough on UK developers who 'hoard' land, Stuart Andrews, partner and planning expert at global law firm Eversheds, says:

"The majority of developers are doing all they can to bring viable development schemes forward, not least because the current national policy context is very favourable and the prospects of success are so great. As such, the majority of sites that are being 'sat on' are either technically constrained or have viability issues. We suspect that most developers would be delighted that a Labour administration might nationalise unused development land as the opportunities for compensation could be immense."
