Eversheds comment: New EU pilot working hours could cause turbulence

  • United Kingdom

In response to today’s decision from the European Parliament regulating pilots’ working hours, Jason French-Williams, expert in transport and employment at global law firm, Eversheds, comments:

“The position taken by the MEP’s is such that it will bring a common approach to flight hours across the European Union.

“Whilst all airlines will have safety at the forefront of their thinking, these changes may well cause difficulties at a practical level for some airlines, who may have to renegotiate long established shift patterns to ensure they comply with the decision of the European Parliament. This is likely to also cause resentment by some pilots/cabin crew who are happy with their current, long established, negotiated working patterns, believing they offer a safe method of working. This point is shown by the position taken by the British Airline Pilots Association.”
