Eversheds Sutherland comment: No free cake on the Brexit table

  • Global

Commenting on the start of Brexit negotiations today Bruce Dear, partner at Eversheds Sutherland, says:

"The time for platitudes and posturing is over. The time for flexible Brexit- talking begins.

“Never mind a soft Brexit, business is crying out for a sensible Brexit: access to talent and essential workers, tolerable tariffs, open markets and fairness to EU and UK citizens. To achieve this, the key ingredient will be a wise compromise on free movement, with the UK exercising its new-found control generously to keep our mutual borders commercially flexible. This would inject goodwill into the talks and open other areas valuable to Britain, such as a single market style deal.

“Both sides in the Brexit talks must negotiate to eat a sensible amount of cake - accepting that it must be paid for with compromises. There is no free cake on the Brexit table."
