Eversheds comment: Planning system reform opposition inevitable

  • United Kingdom
  • Global

On reports that Sajid Javid is facing opposition from senior Tories and a backlash from Middle England over his plans to reform Britain's planning system, Stuart Andrews, partner and planning expert at Eversheds, says:

"The fundamental challenge the Coalition Government created by abolishing regional planning is that responsibility for housing delivery now rests entirely at a local level. There are very few authorities that have embraced this responsibility with any great enthusiasm, and we consequently have a housing crisis that reflects this position.

“It is, in this context, inevitable that the SOS call to do more would come at some point. That moment seems to have now come, and a political fallout is fairly unavoidable."
