Eversheds comment: Default planning position required to support UK economic growth

  • United Kingdom

Commenting on concerns aired over the efficacy of the UK's planning system, Stuart Andrews, partner and planning expert at global law firm Eversheds, says:

"The NPPF is specifically directed at the need for local strategic planning, economic growth and the balanced protection of the environment. These objectives are not displaced by the failure of many local authorities to put up to date plans in place and that position isn't significantly changed in respect of wind farms that are largely governed by national policy.

"The fact remains that Councils need to actively plan for their areas and there must be some default position to support economic growth where authorities fail to meet this clear and obvious requirement."
