Eversheds comment: UK planning reform welcome but fraught with difficulties
- United Kingdom
21-12-2012
Commenting on calls for the majority of UK planning laws to be scrapped, Stuart Andrews, partner at global law firm Eversheds, says:
"We have long been grappling with layers of contradictory advice, statute and Ministerial statements published on our planning system and there is little doubt that it is unduly complex, confused and has a profoundly negative impact on investment.
"While reform is to be welcomed, many will have real difficulty with the sort of reactive and politically motivated changes we have seen in recent years that have served only to create further contradiction and disorientation. It is, for example, important to note that the Coalition's most significant reform to the system has focused upon the dismantling of regional governance. It is only now that the Coalition recognises the void created by this action and the urgent need to provide clear direction for the calculation and assessment of housing need in the absence of important information being provided at a regional level."
