Adjustments - what is reasonable?

Who should attend

This in-person course is relevant to HR professionals, in-house lawyers, staff with line-management responsibilities or anyone taking in an interest in diversity, with a specific focus on disability.

Synopsis

There are approximately 5 million disabled people in employment in the UK and prior to the pandemic this figure was rising. However the employment gap between disabled and non-disabled people is now greater than ever before, with those suffering from mental health problems having the lowest employment rates of all disabled people.

Reasonable adjustments play a huge part in enabling disabled people to obtain and stay in employment. Employees are more willing now than ever before to inform their employers they have, in some cases very complex needs. Employers need to navigate a way through detailed medical advice and recommendations and make sometimes difficult decisions on whether or not adjustments are reasonable and can be implemented, to enable to individuals to stay at work and thrive. Making an incorrect decision can leave employers in hot water, enabling people to make claims for disability discrimination/failure to make reasonable adjustments in the Employment Tribunal.

In this course, working with professionals from Microlink, we will guide you through the legal framework for making reasonable adjustments. We will tackle what is reasonable, how the needs of individuals will differ,  how to get the best out of OH and work constructively with colleagues to ensure you have a truly inclusive working environment and get the best out of your workforce. We will also cover the difficult topic of how to manage termination of disabled colleagues where adjustments cannot be implemented or have been exhausted.
