Practice notes

Yi Siong is a Senior Associate in our Litigation and Dispute Management Team in Singapore. He handles civil and criminal litigation, and has specialist experience in medical disciplinary proceedings and criminal appellate issues. He also writes and comments on novel points of law, with particular emphasis on criminal law and public law.

His recent experience includes:

- acting for the Singapore Medical Council in Singapore Medical Council v Wong Him Choon [2016] 4 SLR 1086, Chia Fong Lin v Singapore Medical Council [2017] 5 SLR 334, and Lam Kwok Tai v Singapore Medical Council [2017] 5 SLR 1168;

- acting for the accused in Chua Hock Soon James v Public Prosecutor [2017] 5 SLR 997, a case involving novel points of law regarding the legality of multi-level marketing and pyramid scheme; and

- appearing before the Court of Appeal, Singapore’s apex court, as lead counsel on behalf of an indigent client regarding the exercise of judicial mercy, as one of Singapore’s youngest lawyers to do so.

- Sui Yi Siong, “Evaluating the statutory test for sub judice contempt in Singapore” (2017) 35 SingLRev 185. In 2016, he was interviewed by Reuters and the BBC for his views on sub judice contempt.

In December 2016, Yi Siong was named by the Singapore Business Review as one of Singapore’s “Most Influential Lawyers aged 40 and under in 2016”. In March 2018, he appeared before a Parliamentary Select Committee on Deliberate Online Falsehoods to give oral evidence on possible measures to combat the spread of fake news.

Yi Siong is also a moot court coach with his alma mater, Singapore Management University; as an undergraduate, he won best speaker awards in the Price Media Law Moot Court Competition and the Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot.
