e-Residency

e-Residency is a state-issued secure digital identity for non-residents of Estonia that allows digital authentication and the digital signing of documents in all dealings related to Estonia.

The purpose of e-Residency is to make life easier by using secure e-services that have been accessible to Estonians for many years (see below some of the services available).

e-Residents receive a smart ID-card with a microchip that contains certificate for authentication and certificate for digital signatures and a ID-card reader. Digital authentication allows you to access different e-services and to log in to any online portals that recognize this type of authentication.

Digital signing allows you to securely sign documents from anywhere you are in the world, provided there is Internet access and you have the id-card and card reader with you. Within EU, digital signatures are legally binding in all member states. Outside EU, digital signatures are legally binding if there exist mutual agreement between the respective governments.

e-Resident can use (anywhere in the world) online the following services:

  • Sign documents digitally with partners, employees and the government
  • Exchange encrypted documents
  • Establish companies, make changes and report annual reports in the Commercial Register (e.g. establishment takes approximately 1-2 days)
  • Access land register
  • Conduct secure bank transfers (with Estonian bank account)
  • Declare taxes
