Employment & Labour
In the contemporary business setting, employment and labour law issues require more attention than ever.
Workforce tends to be the single most important and valuable asset of modern organizations. Employees and executives are covered by employment agreements containing complex arrangements, remuneration packages and long-term incentive plans. All of these arrangements, packages and plans have acquired unprecedented importance as a means of attracting and retaining talent. In addition, they can affect productivity and sustainability of a business or undermine motivation of its workforce. We are mindful of these considerations.
Our team of experienced employment lawyers has accumulated extensive experience in advising clients and acting on clients’ behalf in litigations revolving around complex employment and labour issues.
Clients of our law practice facing a variety of employment law-related issues range from small domestic companies to sizeable global corporations. As Eversheds Sutherland member we stand out from other Latvian law firms with our international work. This year apart from standard day-to-day consultations we were involved in multinational project led by Eversheds Sutherland on cross-Baltic merger advice for Bridgestone, the world's largest tyre and rubber company.

We pride ourselves in having represented and advised clients on a number of matters involving complex employment and labour law issues. The track record of our employment practice includes:
Representation of a large national insurance company in a trial alleging discriminative treatment of three of the company’s employees.
Advice to a leading global electronics equipment manufacturer on a variety of labour law issues that arose following restructuring of its Latvian operation and employee lay-offs.
Advice to a leading global pharmaceuticals company in connection with termination of some of its employees.
Advice to a local municipality on claims by former employees demanding reinstatement to work.
Advice to the local subsidiary of a leading global manufacturer of dishwashers and household disinfectants in relation to maternity leave entitlements of an employee.
We act in legal proceedings initiated by the trade union of the largest national telecommunications operator group concerning the enforcement of a collective bargaining agreement and the appointment of a trade union member to the management board of the first and only Latvia-registered private pension fund formed by employers’ shareholding.
We have provided the leading temporary employment agency in Latvia with legal advice on the full scope of employment law related matters, including collective redundancy of staff, termination of employment contracts on disciplinary grounds etc.
We provided extensive legal advice to the client in a sensitive case with an employee which has escalated in multiple pending civil court cases before the court as well as multiple criminal proceedings which directly influence the former.
We advised the client on a strategically difficult collective redundancy procedure, namely proactively overseeing the whole redundancy process to ensure a smooth and fully compliant procedure with both local and European Union statutory laws and regulations in such cases.
