File name Description Function
__utma This type of cookie file is saved by the user’s browser during the first visit to the site. If the file is manually deleted from the user’s disk, a new __utma file with a different identifier will be saved the next time the user visits the site. This type of file is used to identify unique visits to the site and is updated every time the page is opened.
__utmb This type of cookie file is used to set up and continue the user’s session on the website. When the user views another sub-page of the site, Google Analytics updates the file. If a __utmb file is not found, a new file is saved on the user’s disk and a new session is created. Each time the user visits another sub-page of the site, this file is updated, until it expires after 30 minutes.
__utmc This type of cookie file operates in conjunction with the __utmb file described above in order to determine whether or not to establish a new session for the user. This file has no fixed expiration time, but is deleted when the browser is closed. If the browser is closed but launched again within 30 minutes, the absence of a __utmc file signals the need to create a new session even though the __utmb file has not expired. __utmz This type of cookie file stores information on the source from which the user reached the site (directly, a link from another site, a search engine, or an ad). Storing information on the source of visits.
