Global law firm Eversheds Sutherland significantly expands its services for the energy and infrastructure sector: On 01 May 2020, Dr. Martin Weitenberg, specialised in energy law, joins the Düsseldorf office of the law practice as a new Partner. Before joining Eversheds Sutherland, he worked for Clifford Chance.

“In the context of our core businesses growth, our national and international clients' needs for regulatory advice has increased which is the reason why we strengthen our practice in this field in order to further strategically expand our Energy & Infrastructure Group,” Alexander Niethammer, the new Managing Partner of Eversheds Sutherland in Germany since 01 May 2020, explains.

Martin Weitenberg has many years of international experience in energy law. He advises national and international businesses and investors with regard to renewable energies and power plants as well as energy infrastructure projects such as electricity and gas networks or storage and LNG plants. His advice comprises the preparation and negotiation of project contracts as well as regulatory legal issues including the representation in official proceedings and legal disputes. Energy trade and distribution such as the structuring and negotiation of supply contracts for electricity and gas are another focus of his practice. Weitenberg also advises strategic and financial investors with regard to transactions in the energy sector.

“Martin Weitenberg is an important gain for our energy transaction practice which we already started to strengthen last year with Werner Brickwedde, also from Clifford Chance,” Niethammer continues to say. “With his support we enhance our important know-how for our clients and can advise them with regard to transactions in the energy sector as well as within the framework of the transformation process to a climate-friendly sustainable energy system.”

Weitenberg emphasizes: “Eversheds Sutherland has an outstanding expertise in the international energy sector, something which convinced me immediately. I very much appreciate the possibility to enhance the profile of Eversheds Sutherland in the energy and infrastructure sector in Germany with the support of the global network of the law practice. Eversheds Sutherland is one of the rising stars in Düsseldorf and I look forward to cooperating with my new colleagues there and in the other offices of the law practice.”

By winning Martin Weitenberg, Eversheds Sutherland remains on track of a further expansion in the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. Only a few months ago, the law practice announced that two new partners joined the Düsseldorf office: Werner Brickwedde who started on 01 August 2019 and who had already worked on numerous transactions in the energy sector together with Martin Weitenberg and the tax lawyer Simon Weppner who joined the law practice on 01 September 2019.

“The expansion of our Düsseldorf office continues according to plan,” co-head of the office Maximilian Findeisen emphasizes. “The energy sector traditionally plays an important role in the industrial state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Martin Weitenberg is a perfect fit for our Düsseldorf team and brilliantly complements our transaction know-how and our expertise in public commercial law as well as in the construction and planning law in the area. With his support, we can significantly enhance our service portfolio for businesses and investors in the energy sector.”

With Martin Weitenberg, 20 lawyers now work for Eversheds Sutherland in Düsseldorf, among them are seven partners and five counsel. The office is planned to grow further.

The German Eversheds Sutherland energy practice is part of the global Sector Group Energy & Infrastructure with more than 300 lawyers worldwide. The international team of experts advises with regard to the acquisition, the financing and the sale of energy generation plants and networks, with regard to infrastructure projects as well as energy supply and trade. Among the international clients of Eversheds Sutherland are energy companies such as CNNC, Innogy, RWE or Shell as well as investors and banks.
