Trainee Programme Information

Rotations

Our trainees complete four rotations and are required to attend the PPC course run by the Law Society of Ireland. Rotating to four different areas of the firm, provides our trainees the opportunity to experience different areas of law so that they can find a practice area that best suits them. Each trainee completes a rotation in two of the following areas Real Estate, Corporate and Litigation as well as a specialist rotation - Employment, Tax, IP/IT, Banking, Pension, Funds and Construction and Projects.

At Eversheds Sutherland you have the option to complete a pre seat rotation (subject to business requirements). Pre seats run from April to July each year.

Rotation feedback

We recognise the role regular feedback plays in a trainees journey to growth and development. Regular performance meetings ensure that our trainees are getting the most out of each rotation. Each trainee receives a mid-rotation review and an end - rotation review with their instructing partner. The review meetings provide an open forum for trainees to receive constructive feedback on their performance, strengths, development areas and career prospects.

Your voice

As a trainee your voice is important to us. The trainee committee organise quarterly meetings which gives trainees the opportunity to share feedback, ideas and suggestions.

Our Trainee Committee (made up of partners and HR) meet on a monthly basis to discuss and review the traineeship programme and any queries/suggestions that have arisen from the trainee group to consistently improve and develop the programme and experience.

Full information on the trainee programme can be found in our brochure, please click here.

Learning and Development

Support from the start

We understand the importance of development and growth to our trainees. As such, we’re committed to ensuring that a traineeship with Eversheds Sutherland LLP is both stimulating and enriching, and includes a variety of development opportunities. Our trainees have a clear career path and regular assessments to ensure they have the support they need and can track their progress. In addition, our L&D team provide a training programme that equips our trainees with the skills and tools needed to be successful:

Trainee competency development framework

Our trainee competency framework helps our trainees to understand their role and the skills needed to be effective. It provides transparency and clarity around career progression in the firm and the competencies, both technical and non-technical, that our trainees will develop throughout their traineeship.

Classroom training

Our post PPC programme is focused on supporting our trainees throughout their traineeship, in order to help them to achieve their goal of becoming a technically skilled and confident lawyer. The programme is designed on the basis of the trainee competency framework and is also aligned to the trainee role expectations and the firm’s values. The programme covers a wide variety of topics, including business writing skills, an introduction to business development and communication skills.

Learning on demand

In addition to the classroom based training, our trainees have access to a wide variety of on-demand online learning materials via our learning management system. This gives our trainees the chance to access learning whenever they need it and from wherever they are.

Professional Support Lawyers (PSLs)

Our PSLs provide support and practical working knowledge to our trainees and are also available to help with any ongoing technical queries. In addition, they provide practice specific training at the start of each rotation to ensure our trainees learn in a formal setting and on a practical level. Our trainees also attend monthly department meetings and receive monthly bulletins from the PSLs thereby keeping them up to date with any developments in the practice area.

Knowledge Centre

Our trainees need quick and easy access to current and authoritative information. Our knowledge centre offers a diverse range of resources and services to help our trainees to achieve these business objectives. In addition, our department specific trainee memos contain all the information that our trainees need to know about working in a particular department.

Trainee Secondment

Read on below to learn more about Sean and Rosalyn's trainee experience.

Sean Canavan

I am currently working on the Pensions team, having completed a seat in Real Estate and Corporate. In all these departments I have worked closely with fee earners in providing legal services to both international and domestic clients. Through my experience in each of these roles, I have been given the opportunity gain and develop a range of skills which I will build upon as move towards qualifying as a solicitor.

Throughout my traineeship I have been involved in a variety of work, from assisting in large Corporate and Real Estate transactions, to providing clients with Competition Law and Pension Law advices. A common feature in all of this work is that there has been a strong focus placed on my training and development. In particular, partners and senior members in the firm have facilitated me in taking on greater responsibilities and more complex legal work during each seat. Although this can present challenges, I have found my co-workers in the firm open and approachable when it comes to asking questions and seeking guidance, which has supported my learning and improvement as a trainee.

Eversheds Sutherland places a strong emphasis on collaboration and this is particularly evident in its training programme. During my traineeship, I have found myself working with many departments in the firm and with other Eversheds Sutherland offices. This has allowed me to gain an insight into the variety of legal services which the firm offers. Its collaborative culture is also evident Eversheds Sutherland’s social programme, which ranges from charity fundraisers and trips abroad for trainees along with firm-wide events such as the Christmas party and the summer BBQ. As a result, I have built a network of friends and professional relationships in the firm which will be valuable in my future career.

Rosalyn English

I first joined the firm as part of the Summer Internship Programme and returned to commence my traineeship. My first two rotations were in the firm’s Litigation and IP, Technology and Data Protection departments and I am currently completing my seat in the Employment department.

In each of my rotations I have been exposed to and assisted with a wide variety of stimulating work. Being part of a global law firm means I have had exciting opportunities to work on cross-jurisdictional projects with international clients.

The move from learning about law in college and FE-1s to working in a law firm can be challenging, but this is made much more manageable in Eversheds Sutherland. There is a strong culture of openness and collegiality in the firm. People are generous with their time and you are always encouraged to ask as many questions as needed. This supportive culture has been hugely beneficial to my development as a trainee solicitor.
