We want well rounded individuals with a passion for law.  We look for candidates who have achieved a 2:1 or above in their degree. All FE1’s must be obtained before commencing a traineeship.

Many of our solicitors began their careers as trainees in the Firm and retention of newly qualified solicitors at Eversheds Sutherland remains an important objective of our Firm. As the Irish member of Eversheds Sutherland International, this provides opportunities to gain international experience. This includes taking part in our trainee secondment competition whereby the successful candidate has the opportunity to complete four weeks in one of the international offices.

Eversheds Sutherland also has a very active CSR committee which organises health and wellness initiatives as well as community and environmental work. As an trainee you have the opportunity to get involved in any of the organised diversity events or become a member of our Diversity Committee.

The Traineeship Programme lasts for 32 months. During this time each trainee will complete four rotations. This gives our trainees the opportunity to experience different areas of our Firm so that they can find a practice area that best suits them. Rotations are completed in any of our departments including; property, commercial, litigation and banking along with any of our specialist area which consist of; employment, tax, insurance defence, healthcare, pensions, construction and procurement.

You will receive a competitive salary (including full payment while attending PPCI and PPCII courses). Each trainee will attend numerous commercial education and ‘know-how’ seminars run by our Knowledge Centre along with departmental seminars and updates.

We believe that regular performance reviews ensure that our trainees are getting the most out of each rotation. Each trainee receives a mid-rotation review and an end of rotation review with their instructing partner or solicitor. Both types of review meetings provide an open forum for trainees to receive constructive feedback on their performance, strengths and career prospects. Review meetings also afford trainees the opportunity of expressing their future rotation preferences and interests as they develop.

As a trainee your voice is important. We hold bi-monthly trainee committee meetings which give trainees an opportunity to meet to share thoughts, suggestions and ideas for improvement.

My experience as a trainee in Eversheds Sutherland

Thomas CostelloI began my traineeship in the summer of 2017, having previously secured a training contract as part of the summer internship programme, in 2015. Currently, I have completed PPC1 as well as two rotations in the litigation and corporate departments.

During this time, what has impressed me most about life as a trainee in Eversheds Sutherland is the manner in which the firm seeks to facilitate the development of their trainees legal experience. There is a constant emphasis on training seminars, career development, as well as a friendly atmosphere and genuine open door policy operated throughout the firm.

As a result of this, I feel that I was afforded real legal experience owing to my involvement in client meetings and court proceedings, as well as drafting advices to clients. Added to this is the constant collaboration with partners and colleagues both across the firm and in our international offices, which not only enables you to learn from the best, but also develops your capacity for taking on larger, multi-jurisdictional work.

It's not all work and no play in Eversheds Sutherland however, as the firm also emphasises a healthy work life balance through multiple events such as trainee weekends away, summer BBQ's and Christmas parties, as well as the firms tag rugby and football teams.

As such, I cannot recommend the Eversheds Sutherland traineeship programme highly enough.
