Student Placement Programme

Our student placement programme will provide you with an opportunity to experience a dynamic, fast-paced and unique working environment associated only with a leading global corporate law firm such as Eversheds Sutherland. Over the course of the placement you will become embedded in the firm and our culture, build relationships, work on high quality transactions and gain an insight to life in Eversheds Sutherland.

The Programme

As a placement student, you are assigned to one of our legal teams; Property, Corporate, Litigation, Employment, Education, IP/IT, Tax, Banking, Funds, Construction & Projects or Pensions. You will directly work with our partners and solicitors engaging in high quality and interesting work. Our real open door policy ensures you feel comfortable and supported whilst learning and engaging in valuable work.

We understand that starting a new job can be an exciting but also nerve-wracking process, so as a placement student you are allocated a buddy to welcome and support you throughout your time in the firm.

You also receive feedback with a mid and end feedback session with your reporting partner.

And while hard work is inevitable our sports and social committee organise numerous events including pilates, fun runs, quiz nights, cinema trips and bowling. Our active CSR Committee also organise wellness programmes alongside community and environmental initiatives.

Learning and Development

The learning and development aspect of your work placement is designed on the basis of the 70-20-10 learning model – 70% on-the-job experience, 20% coaching and 10% structured or classroom based learning.

We encourage you to take full advantage of all on-the-job learning opportunities during the placement in order to gain as much hands-on experience as possible. Likewise, you will have plenty of opportunities to learn from those around you. Lastly, we are committed to ensuring you receive dedicated classroom based learning during your placement. We have selected classroom based modules in order to help you to meet the requirements of your day-to-day role and build long-term professional skills.

The duration of your placement depends on your course and university.

"This year, I am participating in the Eversheds Sutherland Work Placement Programme as part of my Bachelor of Civil Law course in DCU. During my first week, I received comprehensive, yet not overwhelming, training; teaching me and my fellow placement students the way in which the firm is run.

I was allocated to join the Employment team, which has been nothing but a positive experience. I have built trusting relationships with my team and have been provided with genuine responsibility with cases and tasks. It is a 100% immersive experience with my team eager to teach and patient with my mistakes. This has created an extremely effective and comfortable learning environment and ensured a smooth transition into office life. I have direct involvement with clients and cases and see cases complete their course from start to finish. I compile briefs for counsel, draft contracts and compromise agreements and conduct research on interesting topics such as the gender pay gap, the transfer of undertakings and sexual harassment. I also get involved with the Social Committee too, helping out with the Christmas Panto and the St Vincent de Paul food drive. There is not a dull moment!

Everyone who works here is so friendly and helpful, contributing to the kind and caring atmosphere. I have learned so many transferable skills which I will continue to use throughout my legal career. Eversheds Sutherland has exposed me to what my future could, and will hopefully hold, as a solicitor."

"The student placement programme here at Eversheds Sutherland has provided me with great experience and insight into all aspects of working life at an international law firm and is one I would highly recommend to other students. The experience you get here is vast and hands on, from the training programme organised by the Learning and Development Department - which is aimed at setting you up for your time on the placement programme and beyond – to the regular attendance of team and department meetings – you are exposed to many different aspects of working life in the firm. The environment within the firm is perfectly suited to a student seeking to develop their skills in Law in a practical way that you don’t get in a lecture hall in college. Everyone in the firm is approachable and happy to help. Your day to day tasks are explained in a way which helps you understand not only how you do them but also why these tasks are necessary, which is something I find really engages you with the work you are doing on a day to day basis and really develops your understanding of the work that goes on in the department you are in during your time on the programme. I find the student placement programme is really well structured here and is definitely worth doing for any student considering a future career in law."
