2019 CSR Activities

Barretstown

We are delighted to be in our twelfth year of partnering with Barretstown.  We continuously undertake fundraising initiatives throughout the year to support the charity. We also engage in sponsorships for events that the charity organises and support any of their golf or quiz events.

Site enhancement day

We participated in a site enhancement day at the Barretstown camp in Kildare on 8 February, 2019. It was a really great day and a fantastic opportunity to give a little back. We got to see first-hand the wonderful work that Barretstown do for children with cancer and other serious illnesses. We were separated out into teams to do different tasks, such as weeding the playground, housekeeping chores in the accommodation and cleaning out the horse sheds.

The Barretstown Gala Ball

We were delighted to sponsor the Barretstown 25th Anniversary Gala Ball on Saturday, 28 September in the Royal Dublin Society, Ballsbridge. Barretstown celebrated 25 years of continuing Paul Newman’s legacy.

Calcutta Run

A number of our staff members took part in the Calcutta Run and Cycle on Saturday, 18 May 2019. There was a 5Km or 10Km run, which started at the Law Society in Blackhall Place, went through the Phoenix Park and led back to Blackhall Place. The cycle was a 50Km or 100Km cycle across Dublin which also started and finished in Blackhall Place.
The Calcutta Run & Cycle are in aid of two amazing Irish charities; The Hope Foundation – which funds and operates over 60 projects that work to free children from child labour and improve the quality of life for children living on the streets of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India, which are exposed to horrendous physical and sexual abuse and The Peter McVerry Trust - which is committed to reducing homelessness in Ireland by providing services, primarily to younger people and vulnerable adults with complex needs, that offer pathways out of homelessness and assist people to re-establish themselves in the community.

Darkness into Light

On Saturday, 11 May some of our employees took part in The Pieta House Darkness into Light run/walk. Each year, the Darkness into Light event provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been bereaved by suicide. We are proud to support such an important event and charity.

PILA

In 2018, we agreed a 5 year strategic partnership with PILA. PILA was established to develop public interest law in Ireland in a practical way. PILA assists in delivering on one of FLAC’s core strategies, by helping to develop and deliver improved access to justice.
We are delighted to partner with PILA again this year and support their vision.

Pro Bono Work

We are currently carrying out a project for Irish Living Movement Ireland (“ILMI”). This is a referral from our pro bono partner the Public Interest Alliance (“PILA”). We co-ordinated a research project which was supervised by Gail Nohilly and Eoin Mac Aodha, for ILMI in respect of their request for assistance on independent living options for people with intellectual disabilities. The aim of ILMI is to affect legislative change in this jurisdiction and to ensure that individuals who have an intellectual or physical disability (primarily intellectual) have access to assistance in their home rather than residing in institutions.

Eoin recently presented our research findings at a Parliamentary all-party briefing held on 29 May of this year attended by Minister for Disability Finian McGrath. A motion was brought in the Dail on 19 November by Thomas Pringle, which passed unanimously, calling on personal assistance for individuals with disabilities to be made a right. The next step is for the legislation we have drafted to be brought before the Oireachtas for debate.

Early Learning Initiative, National College of Ireland

We are delighted to be a partner of the Early Learning Initiative (ELI), National College of Ireland. This initiative provides pioneering, ambitious and innovative programmes that enable marginalised children to succeed in education, career and life.

Eversheds Sutherland's partnership with ELI has helped them to:

  • Improve 6,000+ children’s social, language, literacy, coding and numeracy skills
  • Raise educational aspirations in marginalised communities
  • Support 9,000+ parents as their children’s first and best teachers
  • Connect vulnerable children and their families with local businesses, third level education and the community

Health and Wellness Programme

Intro to workplace wellness

We held a fast paced, information rich seminar given by ‘Suicide or Survive’. The session addressed issues such as stress and how your thinking impacts your mental health, becoming aware of our daily thoughts and moods, taking personal responsibility for managing your own mental health and how and when to seek help.

Bike repair day

The Cycle Clinic, who offer a fully equipped mobile bicycle repair service to promote cycling and a healthy workforce, were onsite conducting a Bike Repair Day where employees can avail of a full service.

Annual health check with WebDoctor

Doctors from WebDoctor came onsite to conduct our annual health checks. Staff members could register for a corporate health check, which includes height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, lifestyle questionnaire, abdominal girt + ratio, blood tests and a medical report.

Bloodworks

On 21 May, all of our employees had the opportunity to give blood with Bloodworks. Every year thousands of Irish people of all ages require blood transfusions in our hospitals. Giving blood is a simple, quick and easy way to save lives. Bloodworks is a way in which employees can help to save lives and donate blood.

Workplace wellness

We held this Workplace Wellness workshop for those who have responsibility for a team. The intention is that it would equip managers and team leaders with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be more effective in dealing with the issue of mental health in the workplace. The workshop covered topics such as; opening the conversation around mental health, how to support a team member who may be struggling, reducing stigma in the workplace, legislation in relation to workplace mental health, how to provide reasonable accommodation and the role of the manager/team leader in supporting and signposting.

VOICE

We are delighted to announce that we have become gold members of the organization VOICE. VOICE Ireland is a member-based Irish environmental charity that empowers individuals and local communities to take positive action to conserve our natural resources.
We have launched our Green Team within the firm. During this launch event Mindy O’Brien, CEO of VOICE presented to the firm giving us all some practical tips on how we can reduce our impact on the environment, with some hints on how to prevent the creation of waste in the home and office.
We had a beach clean on 5 June where members from our firm went to Sandymount Strand and participated in the beach clean.
We have also given all staff members a keep cup and a reusable water bottle in an effort to reduce the amount of single use plastic used within our firm and among our colleagues.

Now in its third year, Eversheds Sutherland global offices came together to take part in Global Running Day to raise awareness and funds for our global corporate charity partner, WaterAid.

This year we combined World Environment Day and Global Running Day to host a ‘Plogging’ beach clean-up initiative where we jogged along the beach while picking up rubbish on 5 June at Sandymount Strand. See our Global Running Day page for more info.

Strictly Come Dancing

Two of our trainee’s Kirsty Farrell and Tim Ryan represented the firm in a Strictly Come Dancing competition in aid of Ozanam House in the Liberty Hall on Friday, 8 March 2019. Ozanam House is operated by St. Vincent de Paul and provides much needed resources and development skills to individuals, young and old in some of Dublin’s most disadvantaged areas.
