Belt & Road Intiative - China's vision and its ramifications | Tuesday 26 October 2018 | Hong Kong

Much has been written about the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), it is an ambitious project with an estimated US$1.3 trillion a year being spent on infrastructure along the route. Reaching about 65 countries which cover 65% of the world’s population, the BRI is a compelling statement of engagement with the world by the President Xi Jinping. The initiative is designed to enhance China’s economic and strategic influence and leave it in the leadership position.

What needs a specific mention is that the Belt – arguably the most serious challenge to the geo-strategic status quo lies in China’s program to dominate the maritime logistics network from East Asia and across the Indian Ocean to South-Eastern Europe. In part, this strategy aims to secure China’s energy supplies – namely, the sea “lines of communication”.

This panel will examine the geopolitical ramifications of BRI through China’s ambitious expansion on the Maritime Silk Road from various perspectives. The speakers will highlight the key observations on the Belt initiative on a global level, and provide local insights on the impact and where the opportunities lie.

The discussion will be moderated by Jae Lemin, Infrastructure and Project Finance Partner of Eversheds Sutherland.

Panellists include:

  • Bill Wang – General Counsel, ICBC Asia
  • Dane Chamorro – Senior Partner, Control Risks
  • Michael Carl – Advisor, SSEK Indonesia
  • Minh Duong – Partner, Asia Counsel Vietnam
