Commercial dispute resolution

Eversheds Sutherland has a highly-regarded team of lawyers able to handle the largest and most complex disputes faced by our clients.

The commercial disputes practice has been transformed, such that some observers are unaware of just how rapidly we have progressed. Over a sustained period of reorganisation, investment and international expansion, our team of lawyers works across all major jurisdictions. We advise our clients on the most serious commercial threats they face: even those companies which might previously have defaulted to the Magic Circle for the highest-value legal cases increasingly come to us. Eversheds’ wider reputation is finally catching up too: we have recently been named “best firm” in an extensive survey of in-house counsel by Legal Business.

For long-term client Tyco, we successfully defended its subsidiary ADT Fire and Security plc against a claim of £100m brought by Cadbury and Trebor following the alleged failure of its fire-suppressant system in a factory.

Our team led on the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust public inquiry. This highly-sensitive, government-led inquiry into the Trust’s healthcare provision was the most prominent intervention of its type to date, and gained national attention. Our work earned public commendation from the chairman of the inquiry (and won an industry plaudit in the FT’s Innovative Lawyers awards in 2013).

We acted for GDF SUEZ in a £100m warranty claim following its acquisition of Teesside Power Station.

Whilst our expert litigators and arbitrators provide top-class, intellectual and robust action when it is called for, we remain a pragmatic and relationship-orientated firm – and we are helping to define what modern contentious legal advice should entail. So we work day-to-day with our clients to keep them informed, forewarned and protected.

We will continue to grow with our clients, and our work is increasingly international in nature. Our fast growing teams in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia (where we have just expanded our international arbitration offering) offer clients a truly joined-up resource to keep them safe wherever they do business.
