Charterparties and bills of lading

  • Advising shipowners and their insurers in multimillion dollar liquid cargo disputes, using onboard investigation services to achieve early settlement and minimise legal costs.

Collision and salvage

  • Advising the owners of the Tasman Spirit in relation to its grounding in Karachi in 2003 and the subsequent litigation both in Pakistan and in the UK.


  • Advising a logistics firm on the termination of a long term charterparty on the basis of a breach by the owner. There was a change of ship management company, loss of oil major approval and breach of ISM. The dispute involves claims totalling around 5 million dollars.
  • Advising one of the largest oil tanker companies in the world on a ship sale dispute with claims exceeding 20 million dollars. We provided advice and negotiated a very favourable settlement through mediation.

Marine insurance

  • Advising an assured on a 15 million dollar P&I coverage dispute.
  • Advising a client on insurance and pollution issues arising from the operation of a Floating Storage and Offloading system in Qatar.
  • Advising and drafting a new class of marine risks cover for an insurer.
  • Advising an insurer on an international restructure of its marine business.

Port & harbour law

  • Advising on the sale of land to be used as a new container port terminal.
  • Advising a ship owner and their insurer on a claim resulting from the 12 million dollars contamination of a cargo on a ship's first voyage. Allegations of fraud were also raised.

Ship finance/sale and purchase/shipbuilding

  • Advising a UK ship owner on the acquisition of a series of vessels from a Chinese shipyard, and their immediate delivery to a third party buyer.
  • Acting for a Polish shipyard in a dispute following the failure to deliver vessel(s) under a shipbuilding contract.
  • Advising UK clients on the acquisition of over 30 vessels from Far East shipyards including contracts, novations, refund guarantees, registration, delivery, finance and onward sales.
  • Advising a NYSE-listed ship-owner on the conversion of a VLCC for use as an FPSO.
  • Advising a UAE-based ship-owner on its dispute with an Indian shipyard over delays in ship-building and issues of force majeure, fraud and international arbitration.
  • Acting for an Argentine shipyard in a state-immunity dispute over a cancelled ship-building contract.
  • Advising a Korean shipyard on the restructuring of ship-building contracts following default by the buyer.
  • Advising a NYSE-listed ship-owner on warranty defect claims totalling 25 million dollars and claims against class for failure in supervision.

Energy and tankers

  • Advising a major energy provider on the shipping aspects of the construction and operation of off-shore wind farms.
  • Advising on biomass projects including drafting and negotiating feedstock contract terms and port agency agreements.
  • Advising one of the largest private coal operators on its chartering operations, including reviewing and drafting charter party contracts.
  • Advising tanker owners, managers and oil traders on various legal issues relating to the carriage of oil and other liquid cargoes.
