Practice notes

Tony is a Partner in the International Payment Services Group with a focus on operational and fintech advisory work for banks and other payment service providers. This includes the remediation and development of payment related products linked to areas such as settlement and clearing, cash management and cash processing and network banking arrangements. Increasingly this involves advice to payment providers and participants seeking to utilise digital currencies and DLT in the payments sector. He also advises on custodial and collateral structures for financial institutions and reinsurance participants.

Tony often advises financial institutions and system providers on changes introduced to financial markets infrastructure including TARGET2, SEPA, CREST, CHAPS, Bacs, CLS Bank and the New Payment Systems Operator.

Recent instructions include:

  • representing all 11 settlement banks in negotiations with Euroclear, the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on changes to the funding of US Dollar liquidity on to the CREST platform to comply with the CSD Directive and the Principles of Financial Markets Infrastructure issued by the CPMI and IOSCO.
  • advising a leading UK insurance and investment group on the collateral arrangements in reinsuring £1 billion of assets to an Irish subsidiary as part of its Brexit arrangements
