Steve has 22 years' experience of professional human resources work and qualified to full membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in 1985. He has 11 years' experience in the further education sector, having worked for North Manchester Community College, South Manchester Community College and West Cheshire College. As head of human resources at West Cheshire Steve was responsible for preparing the College for incorporation and for the creation of a human resources function. He also negotiated and created a new set of personnel procedures and policies which led to the publication of a staff handbook, the introduction of a new contract of employment for academic staff and the leadership of the College to receive Investors in People status in 1995.

Steve has also worked as head of human resources for Lancashire Constabulary, where he was responsible for restructuring the personnel division to provide a more professional and efficient service to all managers and staff within the force.

In April 2001, Steve took up the newly formed position of human resources consultant for Eversheds. He has experience of all sectors of business and commerce, including handling compulsory and voluntary redundancies, line management training, investigation into a relationship problem within a team, termination of the chief executive of a PLC, and general hands-on human resources advice to ensure that clients meet their objectives.
