Charlotte Cartwright

Partner

Charlotte offers the full spectrum of pensions legal advisory services.

A pensions partner in our London office, she has over 10 years of pensions law experience advising occupational pension schemes, with a particular focus on large or technically complex schemes.

Whether you are a company or a trustee, Charlotte has the experience to help you navigate the full spectrum of pensions legal issues — both in the UK and on international projects. This includes the day-to-day running of pension schemes, pensions and corporate restructurings, M&A, and international benefits work.

She is actively involved in developing pensions law in the UK, including in her role on the legislative and parliamentary subcommittee of the Association of Pension Lawyers (the committee which takes the lead on consulting with government and regulators on upcoming changes on behalf of the Association).

In her spare time, Charlotte enjoys running, surfing and spending time with her two daughters. She is also passionate about diversity and inclusion.

Examples of Charlotte’s work include advising:*

  • on the scope of the pensions regulator’s powers to impose liability on third parties for pension scheme funding
  • on compliance with the new ESG requirements on pension schemes, as well as advising on a number of industry-leading ESG initiatives such as a net zero commitment, an application to become a signatory to the FRC Stewardship Code, and additional ESG industry initiatives
  • various trustee clients on proposed buy-ins and buy-outs, investment flight paths, and related decisions
  • on numerous UK and international M&A, including coordinating employment and pensions advice for eight key jurisdictions, and advising on the pensions risks of, and establishments and compulsory assets/liability transfers to, new defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans
  • a non-UK financial institution on the defined benefit pensions implications of its insolvency and related Pension Protection Fund eligibility
  • a pension plan trustee to appoint a captive IFA panel to advise their plan members and related governance model

* This list includes Charlotte's experience before joining Eversheds Sutherland in 2019.
